Helping elderlypeople over thefestive season

The charity says every year many older people across East Sussex become seriously ill as a result of the winter and cold weather, with many facing loneliness and isolation.

The charity, which has an office in Hastings, helps older people claim the benefits they are entitled to, advises on reducing energy usage and informs them about suppliers offering a warm homes discount.

It also offers a companionship service to those in later life who are feeling isolated and lonely. Volunteers introduce clients to local clubs and interest groups where they can form new friendships and gain life- long support.

One of the clients, 79 year old Charlie, said: “I don’t know what I would do without the Day Club.”

Lizzy Chapman, from the charity, said: “You too can help by checking on elderly people as the weather turns cold.

“You can also help by making a donation to support our work.

“£45 can provide a place at our Day Clubs for a lonely older person.

“If you are over 62 you could also donate your Winter Fuel Allowance to Age UK East Sussex, if you feel you do not need it.

“Your donation will be used to support the range of vital local services helping older people who find themselves adversely affected by loneliness, illness or poverty.
