Helping farming families to get by

Local farmers raised more than £500 for farming families, who are in financial difficulty, at a breakfast hosted by some the key advisers that are helping the Sussex agricultural sector through challenging times.

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Society (RABI) fundraiser was held at Spring Barn Farm in Kingston, near Lewes, with farmers joining representatives from UK200Group accountants Knill James, chartered surveyors Samuel & Son and Lloyds Bank.

Last year, RABI gave out £1.9 million to 1,340 individuals and families across England and Wales.

In Sussex alone, grants of more than £46k were paid out in 2015.

Sally Field, RABI regional manager for the South East, said: “Events like this really do make a difference and I’d like to thank like to thank Andrew Samuel – the new RABI East Sussex committee chairman – from Samuel & Son, Kevin Powell, Nick Rawson and Suzanne Craig from the Knill James Agricultural team and Steve Turner and Alan Chilvers from Lloyds Bank.

“There were some fascinating discussions on the current state of British agriculture and its future.”

More than £14,000 has been raised for RABI from recent farmhouse breakfast events.

Knill James’ partner Kevin Powell said: “I’ve never known a time when farmers have not been facing a hurdle that would seem insurmountable to many businesses and I take my hat off to them.

“Creating the soundest-possible financial and asset base to work from is clearly a top priority and the combined skills of the three co-hosts of the breakfast will help them to do that while still focusing on farming.”
