CONGRATULATIONS to Lancing's Chris Hide, who made it through to the final 10 contestants on Pop Idol 2 on Saturday, after singing the Elton John ballad Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

Chris, 18, was the last of 12 contestants to sing live on the reality TV show and then face a public vote.

Each of the singers had to perform a song by one of their pop idols, and Chris chose Elton John.

Members of his family were in the audience and held up "Vote Chris" posters.

Judge Neil Fox told Chris: "You are a brilliant singer, but you don't look like a Pop Idol, you look like a vicar! But the congregation (here] love you!"

Fellow judge Pete Waterman added: "I could sit here and listen to you sing all night long."

Chris has already been given the backing of his former school, Bound-stone Cummunity Coll-ege and Lancing Parish Council.

MP Tim Loughton also wished him well and told the Herald: "Yet again, West Sussex has put itself on the map by showing off its talents, this time in the shape of Chris.

"I have, of course, been backing Chris all the way and I encourage everyone from my constituency of East Worthing and Shoreham to vote for him. Good luck Chris!"

The two contestants with the lowest number of votes left the programme.

The remaining singers will be back again this Saturday, when they will sing songs from the year they were born.

Pop Idol 2 is on ITV1 on Saturday at 6.20pm.
