Hero shop assistant's armed robbery ordeal

A hero shop assistant gave chase after an armed robbery.

A raider stormed the Premier Grocery Shop, Station Road, Heathfield, and demanded cash at 10.15am today (Tuesday).

The shop assistant was shocked when the robber leant over the counter and pointed a hand-gun at him.

The young male shop worker told the Express: 'I was really angry.

'I handed him about 40 out of the till and he ran out.

'I then used my mobile phone to call the police and by this time the other person in the shop had also dialled 999.'

The shop assistant ran out of the store and followed the robber as far as Collingwood Road.

He said: 'I didn't want him to get away.

'I wanted to try and catch him and anyway I knew I couldn't let him out of my sight.'

A police helicoper joined in the search.

A man was detained by police and arrested on suspicion of robbery.
