The heron gull was found on Thursday morning after Jane Wild, from West Sussex Wildlife, received reports the bird had been staggering around Rustington industrial estate wounded.

The animal was taken to the vets, where it was discovered it had been shot twice in the stomach and also had a broken wing.

It is not clear when the animal was shot.

The bullets were removed without complications, but Jane said she was more concerned about the broken wing.

She said she also thought it was possible the attack could be by the same person who shot Toby the cat in Wick last Friday.

She said: “I think it’s absolutely disgusting. Heron gulls are on the amber list. They are protected. I think someone has an air gun and thinks they can shoot anything.”
