Hewitt's History Files

LIFE couldn't have been grimmer for young Dave Johnston after the death of his father from cancer.Within months, Dave, his older brother Tony and his mother Nellie were homeless on the beach at Bognor Regis.

More than half a century later, he still recalls the bewilderment he felt '“ a bewilderment the whole family suffered in silence.

"It was quite frightening, but there was little spoken between us. We were all aware of the situation, and little needed to be said. The reality of it to my mind, even as a child, was something I was more than aware of."

It's a tale Dave, who now lives in Petworth, tells in a new book of memoirs entitled City Streets To Sussex Lanes.
