SIXTY years ago this year Betty Carpenter persuaded the leader of the Unity Youth Club to invite two members of the Southwick Players to speak on the subject of drama.

It was a momentous night, sowing the seeds for the Wick Theatre Company, which this year celebrates its diamond anniversary.

The Southwick Players members were Elizabeth Penney and Peter Elder - and their speech was clearly inspiring.

On the back of it, the Unity Players were formed, a group which later became the Young Wick Players. Ten years later, when youth wasn't quite so much on their side, they became the Wick Theatre Company.

In the decades since, the group has repeatedly confirmed itself as one of the top amdram groups on the local circuit.

Back then, it had probably 20 members. Now it boasts more than 100.

And while not all of them are active members, they are all part of the reason for the group's longevity.
