PETE Willmer doesn't want ever to get to the stage where someone turns round and says 'Oh, look, there's Pete, he used to play cricket for Goodwood.'

The best way to stop that happening, he quite reasonably reckons, is never to stop playing.

He's got hundreds of games behind him, he's 64, and he's got absolutely no intention of retiring.

There's far too much on the horizon '“ not least the prospect of getting his 2,000th wicket for Goodwood Cricket Club, a landmark he reckons he will reach in another three seasons.

Before that, though, he will have notched up in 2010 his 50th season with the club '“ an occasion that will see celebrations all round. 2010 will also see club colleague Matt Beard's 30th season and John Clifton's 20th, all in the year of club president the Duke of Richmond's 80th birthday.
