Mrs Juliet Smith, High Sheriff of East Sussex said was ‘inspired’ by her recent visit to three charities in Crowborough.

Mrs Smith visited the Crowborough Community Association, Friends of Crowborough Hospital and the Citizens Advice Bureau. She told the Express: “We are all deeply indebted to the volunteers who devote so much of their time to ensuring these three wonderful organisations work so well for Crowborough and its people. I learned so much about the town and the huge difference they all make.”

She found the Crowborough Community Centre remarkable, saying: “It combines a pleasing architectural experience with a really functional facility – but one with a heart. You sense the atmosphere and the warmth; it is truly a centre for the community.”

She thoroughly enjoyed her visit to the Day Centre where she was escorted by the Friends of Crowborough Hospital. She felt it has ‘a warm and welcoming atmosphere and far removed from your average old folks’ home.’

She noted the wide range of age groups present where ‘wonderful volunteers worked in a lovely and productive atmosphere.’

Her final call was to Wealden’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau on Croham Road and noted that for many people, their first contact with the CAB was via the telephone Adviceline. Mrs Smith tried the line for herself and was surprised at the breadth and complexity of the problems advisers deal with in face to face interviews. She also commented on the detailed specialised help available to clients.
