HIGH-TECH GADGET TARGETS LAWBREAKERS

POLICE from Wealden, Lewes and Rother districts used an automatic number plate recognition devices throughout the county to crackdown on crime.

The three districts are the first in the Sussex Police region to use the high-tech devices.

The system checks vehicles as they pass sensors and alert the operator if the vehicle is stolen or linked to a crime.

During last week's Operation Drake more than 7,000 vehicles were checked and 300 were stopped by police for further investigation. From these checks so far two people have been arrested and one vehicle seized as the owner had no insurance.

Inspector Bob Brown, who headed the operation, said: 'This is a very useful piece of equipment and yet another example of Sussex Police using the latest technology to tackle and disrupt those intent on committing crime in East Sussex.

'This is the first in a number of planned joint operations between the policing districts in the county.

'We will continue to work together with our colleagues in our bordering forces of Kent and Surrey to make East Sussex an even safer place to live but not a place where criminals will feel safe.'
