The Lewes MP has received numerous complaints about the speed of traffic on the road, its surface and the treacherous nature of the road when the weather is cold and the pooled water freezes.

In a letter to Ms Caulfield, the executive director of Highways England, David Brewer, said: “We carry out safety inspections of the A26 in the Beddingham area every 28 days, including checks on vegetation and the condition of the road surface.

“We are conscious of your constituents’ concerns and are carrying out a safety study on the A26, which is due for completion by the end of March 2016. We will then assess any findings with police and relevant authorities to identify opportunities for improvement.

“My maintenance and operations manager will be in touch to arrange a site meeting to discuss your constituents’ concerns.”

Ms Caulfield said: “I am delighted a site visit is to take place and I will use it to raise the issues many constituents have put to me. The A26 is an important thoroughfare linking Newhaven to the A27.

“Making the road as safe as possible is one of my top priorities.”
