Historic recreation at Arundel Castle

Visitors will be ‘transported back’ to 1190, when King Richard the Lionheart had just embarked on the Third Crusade and called upon his subjects to set forth and join him.

Arundel Castle plays the role of a key mustering station for local men, supplies and equipment and will be bustling with ‘loyal subjects’ keen to play their part in the crusade.

Set within a large historical tented encampment in the grounds of Arundel Castle, this event explores the ways in which Norman knights and crusaders changed the course of the castle’s storied history.

The members of Raven Tor Living History Group will recreate the sounds, smells, costumes, combat tactics and crafts of the 12th century at an event being held during the Easter bank holiday from April 19 to 21.

Visitors on the day will be able to listen to the tales told by the Distant Trumpets Story Teller, participate in falconry and archery demonstrations, and watch 12th century combat tactic displays.

There will also be a chance to recreate the crafts of the period during an event billed as one suitable for the whole family.

Bryan McDonald, castle manager, said: “Normans and crusaders events are always popular with visitors to the castle – we are delighted to be hosting this year’s event across the Easter weekend.

“The event is a true spectacle, from educational elements through to breathtaking combat displays and interactive craft sessions. “It is always a delight to see our visitors engaging with the castle’s history, and I know this event will be no exception.”

Arundel Castle will re-open for visitors on April 1.
