HISTORIC TREE AXED

THE spreading chestnut tree which has shaded Alfriston's Waterloo Square has finally yielded to the axeman.

Tree surgeons discovered the landmark tree, familiar from thousands of pictorial and video images, was suffering from an ultimately fatal disease and parish councillors sadly agreed it should be removed.

It has been agreed to replace it with an oak.

In the meantime flint walls which surrounded the base of the tree will be restored and the new mature sapling installed in time for spring.
