Hockey masterclass from Olympian for Uckfield students

At the end of September nine students from years seven to 12 at Uckfield Community Technology College attended a hockey masterclass held by Burgess Hill School for Girls with Bronze Medal Olympian Hannah Macleod.

Student Tanisha Bolton said: “The day started with a coaching session with Hannah who represented the Great Britain hockey team in the London 2012 Olympics.

“There were four schools participating: Burgess Hill, Millais, Oathall and UCTC. Hannah started the session with a few drills to get our heart rate up and then progressed to skills with the ball and eliminating the defence.

“Everyone was keen to watch Hannah show some tips and were very impressed when she demonstrated.

“The second part of the day was a mini tournament between teams of six or seven a side.

“This worked well as we could practise what we had learned. We were delighted to have an inspirational talk from Hannah.

“Everyone learnt that to get to such a high level in your chosen sport you have to accept your mistakes to improve and challenge yourself more.

“It was interesting to learn how much work and training Hannah had to commit herself to even on Christmas Day!”
