Lewes Holocaust Memorial Day Group will hold a series of public events from Saturday (January 25) to the annual day on Monday (January 27) to remember those who suffered during the Holocaust under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia and for 2020 the Holocaust Memorial Trust has set the theme of the day as Stand Together.

Lewes Holocaust Memorial Day Group’s main event will be its free concert Standing Together: Coming Together Through Music at the St John Sub Castro church on Saturday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

The Saturday programme also includes a free writing workshop with novelist Christine Cohen Park from 2pm to 5pm at the Depot cinema, exploring, through poetry, prose and discussion, the memories of being together or alone.

On Sunday (January 26), the 1997 Italian film Life is Beautiful, depicting how a father and son stand together against the Holocaust, will be shown at the Pinwell Road cinema at 2pm (£9 for adults, or £4 for under-25s and concessions) and from 7pm to 8.30pm the venue will host a free session titled Music and Poetry: Standing Together with poets and musicians led by singer-songwriter Adrienne Thomas.

A candle-lit vigil will then run on Monday from 6pm at Cliffe Bridge, with the public encouraged to bring a lit lantern.

Lewes Holocaust Memorial Day Group has worked with the Holocaust Memorial Trust to put its events list together.
