Holocaust memorial service

Standing Up To Hatred is the theme of the Holocaust Memorial Day Service at St Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, on Saturday January 31.

The event starts at 11am and is part of the national commemoration of the Holocaust and marks the relief of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Allies on January 27 1945.

It brings together young and old, of all faiths and none, particularly to remember those who died in the Holocaust and to support those who still suffer from their personal experiences and family losses at the hands of the Nazis.

The internationally renowned violinist John Kane will play a selection of music from the film Schindler's List as part of the Hastings event.

It was Oskar Schindler, a Nazi Party member, who demonstrated how just one person could achieve change if a determined stand against hatred is taken, even in a deadly situation.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Service is jointly arranged by the Council of Christians and Jews, the Hastings and district Jewish Society and the Christian Friends of Israel with the support of Hastings Borough Council.

Admission to the service is free but by ticket only - these are obtainable from Hastings Information Centre at the Town Hall.
