Homegrown veg for Charters Ancaster

Charters Ancaster Preparatory and Nursery key stage one children have been growing their own vegetables outside their classroom window.

Last September they planted onions and garlic and have been tending and watering them over the winter. Earlier this week they lifted them and were thrilled to see how they had grown. They have also been growing potatoes, strawberries, lettuce and various other vegetables.

Daisy, who is seven years old, said: "Last term we made soup from vegetables from a shop; we are now really looking forward to making soup from the vegetables we have grown!"

Dhanushan, also seven, added: "Something has been nibbling our strawberries, we should eat them now..."

The children have joined the Royal Horticultural Society Gardening campaign and used the vouchers they won in the Observer Christmas Carol Competition to purchase gardening tools and more seeds.
