Homes, hotel and retail plan for port site

Southern Housing has purchased the 7.3-acre Shoreham Port site, in Brighton Road, Shoreham, and plans to build up to 400 homes as part of a ‘substantial’ mixed-use development.

The proposals require a full planning application to be submitted to Adur District Council but the site is earmarked for development in the emerging Adur local plan.

Peter Davies, development director at Shoreham Port, said: “This is one of only a few large sites in Shoreham that can make a significant contribution to meeting the high demand for housing in the area.

“We are delighted that the land has now been bought by Southern Housing Group and look forward to seeing their plans for the site in the near future.

The site, which is currently vacant, was marketed by Savills on behalf of LKAB Minerals and the port authority.

Outline planning permission has previously been granted for a mixed-use development, with the finer details to be detailed.

Mr Davies added: “The site had been empty for some time and there is agreement with the local planning authority that this part of the port would be redeveloped for housing and other uses as opportunities arise.

“The money received by the port authority will be invested back into the port to create new and better facilities elsewhere to meet the growing needs of port users.”

Adur District Council cabinet member for regeneration Pat Beresford said he looked forward to seeing the details of a full planning application.

“We are quite clear that this is one of our strategic sites, so the principal of development is established,” he said.

“Dwellings, retail and employment uses are part of our plan for the site. What we haven’t given yet is a detailed permission.”

A spokesman for Savills said there were a number of interested bidders before the site was sold.
