Homework help for parents

Homework can be a struggle - especially if you're a parent. The three R's are not what they used to be, as you know when a child turns round with a pleading face and a page full of scribble.

But relax...help is at hand in the form of free lessons to help grown-ups cope with what goes on these days at school.

The Kip McGrath tuition centre in Beeching Road is now offering parents and carers the chance of free courses to help them with maths and english.

Centre organiser Sian Crossland, who also runs a branch in Eastbourne with Steph Dudson, said: "We've managed to secure funding from East Sussex County Council's Family Learning Division to run free courses in Bexhill for parents and carers of secondary age children called, 'Keeping Up With The Children'.

"We've done several of these in Eastbourne, with over 100 learners. The idea is parents come and see what their kids do at school, how it's taught, and how they can help their offspring."

"The courses have been a really big thing - they have been very successful."

"Anyone that has a secondary school age child can come - anyone with a child aged 10 and upwards really," said Sian.

"These are for mums and dads, carers, foster carers, and grandparents - we have had a 65 year old coming along taking exams."

"What I really want people to know is this is a non-pressured way of finding out what happens in school today. It is about doing a bit of learning yourself, but without feeling you have to come in and present an essay and all the rest of it."

Anyone interested can phone for a place on the taster session (Weds Feb 13th) and then decide to do the longer six week courses, one for literacy, one for numeracy.

All of these take place on Weds mornings and are from 9.30-11.30 with no charge whatsover and free refreshments incuded.
