Honouring war heroes of district

Tomorrow (Friday), 11 pupils from St Peter’s School in Henfield will read eulogies for the fallen and plant a poppy cross at the War Graves in the village from 11.30am.

On Remembrance Sunday a parade will start from the Henfield Club in Cagefoot Lane at around 9.15am, led by the Brighton and Hove City Brass Bandand also including Royal British Legion, Royal Engineers Association, Royal Naval Association, ex service men/women, the parish, district and county councils, Fire Brigade, Police, Scouts, Guides, plus a number of other local organisations.

After the church service the parade returns to the War Memorial and observes the two minutes’ silence.

There is also the playing of the Last Post and 2 minute’s at 11:00am on Tuesday November 11. This again takes place at the War Memorial.

Storrington and District Museum in conjunction with the parish council will be unveiling the original WW1 ‘Storrington Roll of Honour’ at the White Horse Hotel in The Square from 10.45am on Tuesday, November 11. The documents, recently recovered and carefully restored, will be unveiled by Dr Norman Boyland, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, with members of the parish council and Royal British Legion in attendance.

A Remembrance Parade and service is also due to be held in Storrington on Sunday.

In Steyning a service will be held at St Andrew’s Church at 10.30am on Sunday November 9.

A wreath laying service will also take place at the Memorial Garden in Steyning at 10.45am on Tuesday November 11.

On Sunday a Remembrance Parade will be held in Billingshurst, ending at the village war memorial for a short service when the names of the fallen who appear on the Memorial are read out followed by a two minutes silence at 11am. The parade will file into the parish church for the main Remembrance Service, and afterwards will march back to Billingshurst Community Centre.

In the evening the Billingshurst Branch of The Royal British Legion will hold its Annual Remembrance Day Songs of Praise in the Billingshurst United Reform Church commencing at 6-30pm.

In Horsham, Remembrance Sunday commemorations start at the war memorial in the Carfax from 10.50am. Horsham District Council chairman Brian O’Connell, will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of the Horsham district. He will be followed by Mr David Copestake, chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham Branch and Horsham MP Francis Maude.

Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will also lay wreaths.

In addition to Remembrance Sunday, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will hold its annual shorter ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax in Horsham on Tuesday November 11 for those who wish to remember at the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’.
