'I would urge everyone to be vigilant and to use preventative measures, such as keeping bags zipped/secured, and worn with straps over the head rather than just on the shoulder. In addition, keep valuables out of sight in vehicles and doors locked.'

The thefts took place on Monday. The first occurred at about 10.20am in Sandringham Way. The thief cycled away across Hawthorn Road into Highland Avenue after he approached a woman aged 80 from behind and stole the purse from her bag on her shoulder.

The second theft happened at around 5.30pm as a woman sat waiting in her car in Bersted Street outside the Art of Dance and Fitness. This was followed by a theft two hours later in West Meads Community Hall car park in Aldwick.
