Around 30 residents, aged from three to 83, assembled in the Red Lion car park and split into teams to tackle various locations.

Pam Doodes said: “One volunteer, as she went on her way, said ‘I didn’t think Hooe had a problem with litter’. She soon found out how wrong she was.

“In all we filled over 38 sacks of rubbish with things that had been thrown out of cars by thoughtless motorists.

“Fast food packages and containers were found in abundance, crisp packets, soft drink tins and bottles, CD cases, bags of household rubbish, Wellington boots, trainers, a car radio, polystyrene sheets, bubble wrap - you name it, our volunteers picked it up and put it into sacks. Even unmentionables were collected.

Perhaps the most worrying of all was the abundance of empty half vodka, scotch and brandy bottles.

“There were some full sized bottles but mainly those thrown from vehicles are the smaller size. At least 50 must have been collected - so does that mean a significant number of people who use our village roads are driving under the influence of alcohol?

“Just to make our litter pick more difficult many items just would not fit into bags so they were left in heaps around the village and collected and brought to the main collection point on Sunday.

“Dumped items included a micro wave, a domestic fridge, a commercial air conditioning unit, traffic cones, a 6ft plastic picnic table top, swing bin, plastic guttering, floor covering, builders rubble plastic buckets, and more.

Hooe Residents are proud of their village. We all found the litter pick rewarding and we enjoy being a part of the community spirit that is evident, and growing in the village.

“However, we were disgusted at the thoughtlessness of those who come to the countryside to dispose of their rubbish and those who open their vehicle windows and throw out unwanted food wraps etc. without a second thought.

“Thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday morning for the sake of the community.

“But surely the time has come for each and everyone of us to take responsibility. We live in a beautiful part of Sussex. Let’s keep it that way.”

The Clean for the Queen campaign director Adrian Evans said: “Our ambition is to create a community inspired, grass-roots mass action event – one that will become a recurring annual initiative. We felt that marking The Queen’s 90th birthday with the inaugural clean-up was a wonderful way to kick-start it to life.
