The owners made the grisly discovery of their pets' bodies as they left for work at around 8am.

The cats had barbaric injuries, which vets at Fitzalan House in Littlehampton, where the dead animals were taken, believe could only have been caused by a human.

One cat had its skull, brain, spinal cord and jaw removed, and the second, its jaw and skull removed.

The skin on both the cats was left intact, with a small circular incision made to remove the bone.

Sussex RSPCA inspector Hayley Sturla said: "This is an absolutely outrageous incident and we want to highlight what has happened here because the cats did not die from natural causes.

"We want people to be aware of the situation so they are not targeted and we desperately need any witnesses or people with any information to come forward. It was such an horrific attack and we want to find out who did it."

The cats were taken to Fitzalan House vets, where they have been stored, pending further inquiries.

Vet Rachel Harrison, who examined the corpses, said she had never seen anything like it before. She said: "I do not know how anyone has the stomach to do this kind of thing. It was really very gruesome.

"We are assuming from the injuries that they were hit over the head or poisoned before this macabre act took place."
