Horsham 100 hike raises £17,000

A GROUP of hikers has raised more than £17,000 for charity after taking on one of toughest walking challenges in the UK.

On Saturday September 17, 40 people from all over the country took on the gruelling 100km non-stop challenge along the South Downs Way from Arundel to Beachy Head.

Having undertaken this feat, they are delighted to announce that they have raised an incredible £17,000 for the Horsham 100 campaign, with donations still coming in.

The money will supplement the £10,000 already raised for Horsham 100 by Tanbridge House School.

The charity trekking challenge – which saw the participants walk over extreme terrain in all weather conditions – was organised by Horsham 100’s co-founder PMW Communications and was supported by the West Sussex County Times.

Peter Sutton, managing director at PMW, said: “There is no doubt that the walk was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

“Unless you’ve done something like this before it is difficult to understand just how tired you get walking non-stop, especially through the night when the temperature drops dramatically.”

He added: “Everyone who took part worked together as such a great team and we all knew that our goal was to help the children at the Dame Vera Lynn Trust, which is Horsham 100’s charity for 2011.”

“I can’t thank everyone enough for their support both emotionally and financially with their sponsorship. The community really pulled together to help out, from the 1st Shipley Scouts who gave up their weekend to feed all of the walkers to local businesses which generously provided treats such as Kendall Mint Cake for the teams.”

Many other Sussex businesses also took part in the challenge including Guy Leonard Estate Agent, Clementis and even the renowned Wabi restaurant entered a team.

They were joined by an intrepid group of school teachers from Sunderland, who had seen details of the challenge in the West Sussex County Times whilst visiting relatives and decided to travel south to take part.

Gary Shipton, Editor-in-Chief of the West Sussex County Times, said: “We were delighted to support PMW Communications and their 100k challenge.

“The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy is such an incredible charity and to raise that amount of money via one event is truly amazing, well done to everyone that took part.”

It is still not too late to show your support for the walkers and donations can still be made at www.justgiving.com/pmwhorsham100k
