The mosaic was conceived and developed over two years by a team of people from London Road Methodist Church alongside Fiona Nethercleft, a local artist with expertise in mosaics.

The installation, called “I AM…”, celebrates the seven “I AM…” sayings of Jesus Christ and has helped the children explore those sayings in various ways.

Project coordinator Denise Kennedy said: “Fiona was an inspiration to us and was with us all the way – from producing the design, the materials, helping the children learn what to do and gradually this fantastic image appeared out of small bits of glass tiles.

“We all had a wonderful experience together in making this piece of art.”

The children have been working on the mosaic for around nine months.

Komal, nine, who has been involved in all stages of the mosaic’s development, said: “It was great fun. I helped by doing lots of grass and a bit of the sheep.

“I also liked making the video about the ‘I AM…’ sayings – especially the one that says Jesus lights up the world for us, rather than us living in a dark cage.”

Rosie, ten, said: “I liked sticking all the different coloured pieces on. I made lots of the cross in all the different colours and I also made the candle.

“It will help me to remember that Jesus said ‘I AM… the light of the world’.”
