Eight-year-old Nathan Worsell from Northolmes Primary School has won the Swan Walk mosaic competition which has been held by the centre to celebrate their 40th birthday.

Pupils from schools across the district were challenged to create a special design for the centre’s iconic mosaic to mark the milestone with the winning entry being turned into a temporary art installation which will remain on display in the centre throughout the May half term week.

Nathan’s design beat more than 135 other entries and he will be able to watch artists bring his masterpiece to life using recycled vinyl.

He said: “I was really excited and happy when I heard I was the winner.

“I love drawing and spent a couple of evenings working on my design.”

Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk Centre Manager added: “This project has provided Swan Walk with another great opportunity to reach out to the Horsham community.”

“The children’s designs were lovely and it was clear a lot of hard work and thought had gone into all of them.”

As part of his prize Nathan and his classmates will also be able to help the artists bring his creation to life in workshops being held at the youngsters school.

However, Nathan’s designs is only set to contribute to half of the overall mosaic the shopping centre is creating to celebrate its 40th anniversary

The other half will be completed during a free event within Swan Walk on Saturday May 23, held from 11am-4pm, where all Horsham residents are invited to make their mark on this unique project.
