Horsham residents encouraged to recycle more around the home

Residents have been able to recycle more plastic items than ever before following the acceptance of plastic pots, tubs and trays in their blue-top bins earlier this year.

However, a huge percentage of items which are currently being recycled in households come from the kitchen and Horsham District Council (HDC) is encouraging people to recycle more items from around the home.

Recycle week runs from Monday June 22 until Sunday June 28 and HDC’s cabinet member for the environment Andrew Baldwin said: “We would like to thank Horsham residents for their continued recycling efforts but even more can be done to recycle items around the home.

“Recycling week is 22 – 28 June 2015 and we want people to think a little further than the kitchen and recycle items from elsewhere in the house.

“Recycling in our district is now even easier as plastic pots, tubs and trays can be recycled. Just remember to put them in the blue-top bin clean, dry and loose.”

Did you know:

l If everyone in the UK recycled one toothpaste box from their bathroom, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 2,000 homes for a year.

l Drinks cans from around the home are recycled into new cans which can be back on the shelves in just eight weeks and plastic bottles can be turned into fleeces and new plastic bottles.

l Plastic shampoo and moisturiser bottles can also be accepted, along with liquid soap, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles – just remember to remove any trigger top sprays or pump dispenser tops.

l Don’t forget aerosol cans, in fact if everyone in the UK recycled one aluminium air freshener aerosol can, enough energy could be saved to run a fridge for over 91,000 homes for a year.
