Tesco was unable to deliver new uniforms to dozens of children across the county after an ‘exceptional number’ of orders were made for the customised shirts and sweaters.

The failure meant parents were left in a mad rush to find new uniform for their children days before the start of the new term.

Independent retailer Taylor Made Uniforms, based in Horsham, said it was inundated with calls from panicked parents.

Zoe Taylor, owner of Taylor Made Uniforms, said she had been working around the clock to help parents at Holy Trinity and St Margarets C Of E Primary schools, both based in Crawley, to find uniform in time for the new term.

She said: “Two of my schools both use Tesco as well.

“We came to the rescue. We have been working non-stop and I haven’t had a day off all summer.”

She explained many had ordered their uniforms from Tesco in advance and were only told about the delay on delivery at the last minute.

“If I can manage it and I am just a little independent who does a few school uniforms then why can’t they?”

Zoe added she believed other schools in the area had also been affected by the problem.

National newspapers have been reporting the issue has affected more than 2,000 families across the country.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We’ve had an exceptional number of orders for embroidered school uniforms.

“Where we can’t deliver the embroidered uniform before school starts we’ve contacted customers to apologise and let them know we’ll get it to them as soon as possible. We will also be providing these customers with a refund. All other school uniforms will be available in stores and online as usual.”
