Hospice finds successful new means to boost charity funds

A LOTTERY scheme to help raise vital funds for St Wilfrid's Hospice is becoming more and more popular in the city.

Since joining the Local Hospice Lottery in April of this year more than 1,300 game numbers have been purchased.

St Wilfrid’s Trustee Kay Glendinning is among the winners, and she has been a member of the lottery since St Wilfrid’s first joined.

She said: “I was delighted when I received a letter saying I had won a small prize of £10. I have heard that other hospices who are part of a lottery scheme have raised huge amounts of money for their organisations. It’s another way of fundraising and I am hopeful that it will be equally as successful for St Wilfrid’s.”

In July, lottery canvassers Barbara Bartsch, Nicholas Hodge and Alan Vawdrey began work visiting homes across St Wilfrid’s catchment area to help boost support for the Local Hospice Lottery scheme and received comprehensive training from Local Hospice Lottery representatives Sue Huggins and Debbie Thornton. When speaking to residents the canvassers will provide information about the lottery scheme and how it can help St Wilfrid’s.

Individuals fundraising manager Michelle Sidney said: “Many hospices across the country are involved in lottery schemes, and it has proved to be a very successful fundraising tool.

“We decided that the lottery would broaden our appeal and attract people who might not otherwise donate to St Wilfrid’s and we are very pleased with the results so far. We want to give people as many ways as possible to support us so we can continue to provide specialist palliative care to people across the community.”
