HOSPITAL CUTS - WE WILL FIGHT

It is essential to maintain the current status of Eastbourne Hospital and fight any attempt at saving money by downgrading, Hailsham Town Council members agreed this week.

At a meeting of the town council on Monday night they decided to write to the Surrey and Sussex Strategic Health Authority opposing any move to make it 'little more than a cottage hospital with people having to travel to Hastings for emergency and other treatment'.

The councillors were prompted to write after hearing from Polegate Town Council which has sent a similar letter. They also agreed to try and enlist support from the area's four Members of Parliament.

Cllr Ian Haffenden said it was essential to keep Eastbourne as a district general hospital especially with extra housing planned for the area.
