Hospital initiative

A NATIONAL initiative which aims to save lives through reducing hospital acquired infections has been adopted by a hospital Trust.

Saving Lives was created by the Department of Health and the NHS Modernisation Agency with an aim to reduce such infections including MRSA.

A total of nine percent of U.K patients catch a Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) costing around 1 billion per year.

The NHS aims to halve MRSA cases by March 2008.

In January 2005, a Department of Health event "Learning from the Best" brought together infection control practitioners from the UK and abroad, to demonstrate good practice and how to learn from these principles and Saving Lives was a result of this.

Stephanie Dracott, infection control surveillance nurse, at the Trust, is helping to implement the initiative.

She said: "I have always had an interest in infection control and am very pleased to have had the chance to join the team at Eastbourne which has been so supportive.

"Saving Lives is an evidence based programme which will allow us to further reduce infections."
