Hospital mistake as toddler has wrong arm plastered

That was until staff at the Conquest Hospital plastered the wrong arm.

The 18-month-old twin from Jubilee Road fell off a slide, causing a break just above the wrist on her right arm.

Her dad, Alistair, took her to hospital while mum Sarah looked after Lara, Kaylee's sister.

Kaylee faced an hour and a half of X-rays before doctors confirmed it was broken.

She was taken to have a temporary plaster put on and didn't leave the hospital until 9.30pm.

Alistair and Kaylee got all the way home before they realised the mistake had been made.

Alistair said: "My wife phoned the hospital and they had to check the notes. They came back and said we were right.

"Sarah took her back up to the hospital but by that time she was so stressed out she had been sick."

"They managed to get the plaster off ok and put one on the broken arm, but she had been screaming the place down the first time. She was in so much pain," said Alistair.

That was why he hadn't noticed the plaster going on the wrong arm.

"If we had left it any longer it may have done some damage to the broken wrist," he said.

Kaylee is getting used to the plaster after returning to hospital again on Wednesday for a check up and to have the full cast set.

She is now recovering at home with the help of Lara, who Alistair said is jealous of the cast.

"Lara is always pointing at it. It's like when they have got a toy and they both want it at the same time."

A Conquest Hospital spokesman said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Kaylee and her parents. We will be investigating why this occurred and will put in place procedures to ensure it does not happen again."
