Hospital trio win apprentice prizes

THREE apprentices who work for the trust which runs Worthing Hospital have been celebrating scooping awards this week.

The Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was short-listed in six categories at the Health Education Kent Surrey and Sussex NHS Apprenticeship Awards 2015, held on Monday during National Apprenticeship Week.

Matt Woolgar, 18, from Bognor; Jenna Vincent, 24, from Worthing; and Dean Wells, 25, from Pagham, each won a top prize at the event held in Crawley. The trust was also named runner-up in the Apprenticeship Employer of the Year category.

Chief executive Marianne Griffiths said: “I am so proud of our achievements at the awards and would like to personally congratulate each of our winners.”

Jenna Vincent, who won the Level 3 Non–Clinical Apprenticeship award, successfully completed a Business and Administration Apprenticeship at Sexual Health West Sussex, based in Rowlands Road, Worthing, before being appointed project administrator for the service in January.

Jenna said: “I have always had high ambitions, but prior to my apprenticeship my motivation was low due to my career path not providing stimulating and challenging prospects. I wished to move into a business role but found I did not have the requisite experience.”

Now, Jenna is starting a Business Management BA honours degree with the Open University while continuing to work for the trust.

Matt Woolgar won the Level 2 Non–Clinical Apprenticeship award for his achievements working with the facilities team at Worthing Hospital and completing an NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating.

Matt said: “My job is to help maintain the hospital so it is safe for patients and staff. My apprenticeship has taught me skills and knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to learn in another company. The knowledge I have gained has enabled me to do jobs outside of the hospital such as installing a bathroom, heating systems and maintaining people’s plumbing appliances.”

Dean Wells won the Level 2 Clinical Apprentice of the Year award for his commitment to furthering himself in the pharmacy at St Richard’s Hospital where he completed his Level 2 Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills (NVQ) (QCF).

Ms Griffiths added: “We are a major employer in West Sussex and we offer a very broad and expanding range of apprenticeships.

“This year we hope to take on more than 100 new apprentices and I would encourage anyone interested in pursuing a career in the NHS to find out what placements we have available.”
