Hospital’s standard of care hits targets

WORTHING Hospital has been praised for the level of care it offers to patients.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission assessed the A&E department and orthopaedic services during an unannounced visit on December 10.

They spoke to nine patients, who were all complimentary about the care that they had received, as well as one relative of a patient, and 16 members of staff.

One patient said: “The nurses are fantastic, they are gentle as you would expect them to be. They are very caring”.

Another said: “They are marvellous here, I couldn’t ask for better”.

The visit focussed on five key areas, respecting and involving people who use services, care and welfare of people who use services, cleanliness and infection control, staffing and assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision.

Each of these areas was deemed to be satisfactory, as they were when the Care Quality Commission was last inspected in July, 2012.

The report said: “We found that records were very well completed and provided comprehensive evidence that patients had care delivered according to their preferences and needs.

“They showed that the multidisciplinary team worked together to meet the needs of patients.

“The individual care pathways seen had been completed appropriately and individual risk assessments were updated as necessary.

“Rehabilitation pathways ensured that patients were encouraged and supported to regain their levels of independence, as far as was possible. This meant that patients experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

“We found that the wards had sufficient numbers of staff.

“Patients told us that there were enough staff to meet with their care needs in a timely way. We found that the hospital was clean and that infection control was taken seriously.

“We also found that the hospital had systems in place to monitor the quality of the service that they provided to patients.”

Chief executive of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, Marianne Griffiths, said: “This report sends a clear message that staff at Worthing Hospital are skilled, caring, committed, and take a real pride in the work they do.

“The inspectors turned up unannounced, took a long and hard look at the way patients were being cared for, and concluded that standards were high.

“Of course, we cannot get everything right every time, but the inspectors found that our staff were well motivated and well informed, and that the trust was working hard to ensure that they get the support they need to provide high quality care.”
