Waterloo Bonfire Society will be holding its traditional annual fete at The Paddock in Lewes on Sunday, June 8 – and it promises to be the biggest ever.

This is the 35th consecutive year of the fete, which has gone from strength to strength and is now renowned for being a fun-packed event with something for everyone.

Gates open at noon when the society’s Scottish Pipe and Drum Band, made up entirely of members, marches down from the headquarters at The Lamb in Fisher Street. Music continues to be a major part of the event with performances from the Pipe and Drum Band, the Pentacle Drummers and from Lewes band, The Contenders, who will be playing in the Harveys beer tent during the day.

A barbecue will be available with burgers, sausages and other delights all supplied by Richards’ butchers, washed down with a pint of Harveys or a glass of Pimms from the bar. Lighter refreshments will also be available from the tea tent serving tea, coffee, cakes and snacks.

Waterloo aims to make this a family day out and The Paddock will be full to bursting with stalls from other Bonfire societies, community groups and local traders providing a range of interesting items for sale as well as memorabilia and a mix of games and competitions.

New at the fete this year will be a full race card of hobby horse races with cash prizes and a Tote, as well as two performances of Punch and Judy with guest appearances.

With traditional funfair rides and stalls and even a jam/marmalade/chutney and pickle making competition open to all, there will be no shortage of entertainment on offer. No admission charge is made although donations are invited.

On Saturday, June 7, Waterloo will also be hosting ‘The Night Before’, a free music event in a marquee at The Paddock. Bands include the acclaimed Sam Green and the Midnight Heist who appeared last year at the Glastonbury and Isle of Wight festivals and Brighton band Stark. A full bar and good quality local food will available from 5pm with the music from 7pm.
