The takeover from previous owner East Sussex County Council was completed this week. As the new owner, the town council will have overall responsibility for the upkeep of the building, which is part of the Meridian Centre complex. It will also be able to adapt it more easily to meet community needs.

Town clerk Sheila Baker said the council intended to bring facilities up to date.

'We hope to bring it into the 21st Century. We have submitted a grant bid for cinema equipment, seats and a sound booth for the hall and will be extending our office space to make it more accessible to members of the public.'

She added: 'We hope that by modernising the facilities more people will use them.'

The main hall and meeting rooms are currently used by a wide range if community groups for markets, theatre productions, slimming clubs, badminton and whist.
