Hove MP hits back at Farage over '˜enemy of democracy' attack

Labour’s Peter Kyle, who was first elected in 2015, was one of 114 MPs to vote against the Government’s Brexit bill during its second reading in the House of Commons earlier this week.

Mr Farage tweeted a list of ‘Brexit blocking MPs’ adding: “Here is a list of 114 enemies of democracy who should be made to pay the price at the ballot box.”

Mr Kyle responded: “Oh look, here’s someone who’s stood for parliament 7 times, lost 7 times, so self-appoints himself to decide who enemies of democracy are!”

Mr Farage, who has been an MEP for the South East of England since 1999, lost by-elections in Eastleigh in 1994 and Bromley and Chislehurst in 1996.

He has also stood unsuccessfully at the last five general elections in Salisbury, Bexhill and Battle, South Thanet, Buckingham, and South Thanet again.

Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, Mr Kyle argued the country was ‘embarking on the most perilous of journeys’.

He said: “Ever since the referendum, the Government have failed to listen to the concerns of both sides.

“Many millions of people who voted to remain feel powerless, anxious about the future and ignored.

“There has been no attempt to reconcile our country and no attempt to bring people together, which is why many people feel that the priorities of the Conservative Party are being prioritised over the needs of our country.”

Before the vote in Parliament, Mr Kyle explained on Facebook: “I am not trying to block Brexit I am trying to get it right.”
