Sydney Franklin, who lives at Barford Court, Hove, was born in Hackney, London on November 3 1919- almost a year after the signing of The Armistice Agreement which marked the end of First World War conflict.

He has lived at Barford Court for six years, and said that his secret to having a long life is ‘being active and having a good, loving family.’

He said: “Football has been a great passion for me. I’ve been an Arsenal fan all my life!”

Gemma Wheelhouse, activities coordinator at Barford Court, said: “We loved celebrating Syd’s 100th birthday at our home and it was wonderful that so many of his friends and family could be here with him.

“He had a lovely surprise when his son Ron, who lives in America, arrived at the party. Syd is a true gentleman and is an absolute pleasure to have at Barford Court.”

Sydney spent six years in the army and was posted to Brussels to work in the map making department while he was in The Royal Engineers.
