How charity helped me

Mother-of-two Tina Gillingham told those at Home-Start Arun's annual meeting why its services were so important.

Tina (30), who lives in Bognor Regis town centre, said that after an upbringing in care, she had felt isolated after the birth of her first child, Rosie Baker (four).

She was persuaded to attend the Home-Start playgroup in Bognor but took little part in its activities until she was encouraged to join in a sing-a-long. "I became a confident person who didn't need to sit in a corner any more," she explained. "I could have a really bad weekend.

"But I knew the support would be there and there would always be a cuddle and a smile at the playgroup and someone saying it will be all right."

The birth of her second child, Thomas Baker (two), saw him become severely ill soon afterwards.

But Home-Start again provided vital support.
