How did Donald Trump election slogan find itself on Petworth House postcard?

Petworth House and Park has found itself unwittingly at the centre of a social media storm after a postcard of the National Trust property featuring its fallow deer was used to send anti-Semitic slurs to a University of Texas law professor at Harvard.

Among the remarks in the hate mail, the writer borrowed a Donald Trump election campaign slogan saying ‘we’re gonna drain the swamp at Harvard’.

The card was posted on Facebook by Sanford Levinson’s daughter Rachel who said her father was ‘not scared - mostly bemused’ and ‘strangely it seems to have been sent from England’.

Speaking to the Dallas News on Wednesday Mr Levinson said he was no stranger to hate mail but was mystified by the postcard’s origins: “Why would someone send a postcard from what looks like the UK?”

“A National Trust spokesman told the Observer: “The National Trust looks after places like Petworth for ever, for everyone, and we entirely condemn this message.

“We sell thousands of postcards across the places we look after and we’re deeply disappointed that someone who has bought one would use it in this way.“
