How does your mobile network compare?

The quality of mobile internet in the South East compared to the rest of the UK has been revealed in the latest ‘OpenSignal UK State of the Market’ report.

The report shows which of the four main networks 3, EE, O2 and Vodafone offered best national coverage for making a call or accessing the internet using 3G or 4G, and tell you which offer the fastest download speeds.

The South East is among the nation’s best regions for 3G coverage, the report reveals, with only London and part of the North West providing more consistent 3G.

However, phone users in the South East can only access 4G between 20 and 39 per cent of the time.

And 4G coverage in the region is weaker than London, the North and Northern Ireland.

Jointly produced by independent coverage experts OpenSignal and consumer group Which?, the results are taken from millions of data readings taken over a three-month period (November 2014 to January 2015), tracking almost 40,000 users of the OpenSignal app, checking whether they have a 2G, 3G or 4G signal every 15 minutes.

The data was then used to calculate the proportion of time they have access to a signal – a measurement we call ‘time on network’.

Which? reports: “Since the previous report in November 2014, there has been an improvement in general call coverage, a significant improvement in 4G coverage across all networks, and EE overtake Vodafone in the battle to be the fastest 4G provider.”
