How to stay safe on the streets

AVOID danger by being aware is the core message of a new course in self-defence for women soon to start in Bexhill.

Sessions start at Bexhill High School from Sunday February 6 from 2-4pm and are aimed at females from age 13 upwards.

They will be taught a number of techniques and skills by martial arts expert Matthew Braybrook, who says it is all about feeling safer and more confident on the street.

He stresses the course is not about martial arts but is all about observation and awareness.

He wants to teach girls and women how to see what dangers might arise before they even happen and what action to take if threat of attack becomes real.

“These are not very complex moves,” said Matt.

“It is all very simplistic. You would come away from this course being able to use something you learned that day, and it is geared to any age or ability.”

The course will cover a range of methods of self protection, from thinking ahead and pre-empting danger, to knowing how to deal with unwanted attention, or which striking and escape methods are best to use in a given situation.

Matt’s wife Emily commented: “This has made me very confident walking down the road.

“It makes me realise you can look around you and take in your surroundings without having to check behind you every five seconds, or walk along looking scared.

“It is about looking at your surroundings and thinking ahead.”
