How's that for some success?

ST Mary's School in Wrestwood Road, Bexhill, has won the Cricket Foundation's Chance to Shine School of the Year Award for its passionate involvement in the charity's campaign to educate two million state school children through cricket over the next five years.

Inspirational PE teacher Alison Larkin received the national accolade from Bank of England governor and campaign president, Mervyn King, during a celebrity evening at Lord’s Cricket Ground last week, sponsored by Brit Insurance.

VIPs present included England players Paul Collingwood and Jonathan Trott, and England women’s captain, Charlotte Edwards. This year some 4,000 schools and 450 cricket clubs have taken part in Chance to Shine.

Alison said: “It has really made a big difference to our school. We’ve managed to get children starting at a very basic level and we’ve also got five into the Sussex county squad for the first time.

“One boy has also been recommended for doing the level one cricket coaching course.”

St Mary’s, founded in 1922, is a non-maintained residential special school catering for boys and girls aged seven to 19 who have moderate learning difficulties.

It has been involved in Chance to Shine cricket for the past three years.
