Hundreds attend service for announcement of new vicar

More than 200 people attended a special service last week as The Reverend Beth Woodgate was officially installed as the new Vicar of Ringmer.

The service, on Monday evening (June 15), was led by the Bishop of Lewes and the Archdeacon of Brighton and Lewes, and saw hundreds of people attend, including many of Beth’s family and friends from her previous parish in Hampshire.

Beth, who was ordained priest in 2004, becomes the Incumbent of the parish of Ringmer having previously served as priest in Fareham, Gosport and Petersfield deaneries. She also spent time in Kuwait, where she made history as the first woman to serve as an ordained chaplain in the state.

Beth has received a warm welcome in Ringmer, with many convinced that as she starts her incumbency, she brings new energy and vigour to St Mary’s.

The tradition of morning and evening prayer is to be observed at 8am and 5pm daily, and the schedule of services continues with regular 9.45am and 6.30pm Sunday services.

In welcoming Beth, Bishop Richard said that he was particularly pleased to be taking the service as he had interviewed Beth and thought that she was ”jolly good”.

Revd Beth Woodgate takes over the post of Vicar of Ringmer from Will Pratt, who held the role for 14 years from 2000 to 2014.
