Hundreds back petition for free swim in Worthing

TWO hundred people signed a petition, backing Labour's call for free swimming for children and the elderly.

The petition was organised in the town centre by Ian Ross, Labour parliamentary candidate for Worthing West, who wants Worthing Council to support the 50million government initiative.

Three hundred other local authorities are taking part in the scheme, which starts on April 1 and ends in 2011.

The council has said it is not taking part, as the scheme was likely to end up costing the town money, like the free concessionary bus fares, and would mean the loss of valuable revenue.

Also, it would run for only two years.
