Hundreds expected at Angmering cuts ‘summit’

Mencap and the Don’t Cut Us Out Campaign have joined forces to host a Big Cuts Workshop in Angmering on Wednesday (February 29), aimed at helping those affected by the spending cuts.

Several hundred people are expected to attend the workshop to voice their concerns.

Speakers will include national campaigners from Mencap and local care managers.

The sessions will include practical advice on the cuts, how to survive the eligibility re-assessment process, legal rights and how to plan local campaigns.

“The Mencap workshop offers a unique opportunity for people affected by the cuts to get together to voice their concerns and work to change social care policies for the better,” said Barry Pickthall, spokesman for The Don’t Cut Us Out Campaign.

“Individually, the vulnerable can do very little, but as a group we have a strong voice and considerable support from the public.”

Sharon Bowles MEP, who represents South East England in the European Parliament, has announced her support for the campaign.

“Some cuts are necessary in this time of economic hardship, but West Sussex County Council is wrong to cut support for elderly people and adults with learning disabilities,” she said.

“Other county councils in the region have managed to safeguard their adult services budgets.”
