Hundreds of people turn out for roadshow

Hundreds of people took the chance to find out more about the health service at a Bognor Regis roadshow.

The turnout pleased the organisers of the visit by West Sussex NHS Primary Care Trust.

Those who stopped to discover the healthcare facts from the display in the Place St Maur on Fridaywere a mixture of tourists and residents.

Howard Lewis, a public engagement manager of the trust, said: "We want to tell people about the choices they have for healthcare now.

"People who need non-emergency healthcare, such as an operation for a damaged shoulder, can go anywhere they like in the country.

"If they have got family in Surrey, for instance, it might be better for them to be treated in Redhill Hospital than around here because it would be easier for their relatives to visit.

"Or it could be someone who wants to have an operation at a particular time and a hospital elsewhere could do that."

It was up to patients to discuss their options with their GPs when they were being referred to a consultant, he stated.

The choice also extended to more everyday matters such as blood pressure tests. These could be carried out at any time by a pharmacist rather than a person having to see a GP.

Other issues discussed at the roadshow, which toured the county, included access to NHS dentists.
