Organised by Brett Mendoza, vice-chairman of the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund, the walk completed the journey of Jacob Schilt and Matt Grimstone -the pair died in the Shoreham air crash on August 22, on their way to play for Worthing United.

The families of Mr Schilt and Mr Grimstone joined the four-mile walk which started at 10am at the Old Toll Bridge in Shoreham, and ended at Worthing United’s ground at Lyons Farm.

Mr Mendoza said: “It’s been overwhelming. We had a bigger turnout than we anticipated. Around £1,000 was raised while we were doing the walk.

“Everyone turned up in Worthing United shirts, it was really colourful.

“And the sun came out too. It couldn’t have gone any better.”

The money raised from the walk will be presented to Worthing United Youth Football Club, which has been granted planning permission to build a training ground for young footballers - and will include ten football pitches of different sizes.

The cash will go towards the new training ground, helping to paying for goals, equipment, kit, pitch maintenance and eventually a new club house.

So far, more than £11,200 has been raised, and the figure continues to rise.

The Robert Eaton Memorial Fund topped up donations with £2,500, as Mr Schilt was heavily involved with the charity, which commemorates the life of a Brighton and Hove Albion fan killed in 9/11.
