The youngster resisted and elbowed the male in the face, his mother has said, before he ran home to his mother who reported the incident to police.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police are talking to them both (the mum and boy) to discover the circumstances, but it is clear that the boy did not know the man.

“However, it does not seem that he tried to get the boy into the car that he drove off in.

“House-to-house enquiries are now being carried out in the area and police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed or has information about the incident or indeed, the man himself. Email [email protected] or call 101 quoting serial 1318 of 01/04.”

The man is described as white and wearing dark clothing.
