Hurst Green village voice

Greg has been very concerned about traffic in Hurst Green and has already achieved some success. His efforts are appreciated. The variable speed sign by the school which has not worked properly for some time is to be replaced by September for the new term. The Council is considering paying for a crossing by the church which could be subsidised by the County if negotiations can be arranged.

Another matter concerning “The Car Master Race,” is that of parking at the Village Hall. The front of the Hall may be used only when people are attending functions there. However it is allowed to park on the side nearer the road without restraint. Ideally the free car park should be used at all times if possible.

One very enjoyable event at the Village Hall was the Brownies’ coffee evening which made over £90. The Brownies sang, danced and played instruments to the pleasure of those attending. There is some future talent in the Village obviously.

No sooner had the tables and chairs been stacked away, and the washing-up done, than the Short Mat Bowlers came in with their usual cheery greetings and in a trice the green bowling lanes were in place for the members to enjoy their sport. Why not join? Just come along on a Monday about 7pm meet the friendly people who will gladly tell you about the Club - and probably allow you to roll a bowl along the line.

Also on Monday evenings the Choir will be in full voice at the School 8 till 9.30 pm. Come on gentlemen join the ladies they need more male voices and the men there need support of course! Just turn-up and bring a friend -singing lessons to help those who are doubtful about their own tones. There must be quite a few men in Hurst Green who have voices good enough to join a choir.

The Aviation Museum invites the public to visit Bush Barn on Saturday July 21 from 1pm. Free parking and admission, (donations welcome), light refreshments available. But there’s more, visitors from the Harley Davidson Riders’ Club of Great Britain (S.E Branch) will be there. There will be a display of motor bikes as well as the museum itself. This is Man Thing but ladies are welcome - some do ride motor bikes very well, but your correspondent’s first attempt to ride one enabled her to enjoy free board at the Queen Victoria Hospital where she was nicknamed “Hell’s Grannie”.

The visiting team for the week-end cricket match came from picturesque Matfield.They lost their pavilion in a fire but did not lose the match which was drawn. Hurst Green scored 225 and at the close of play Matfield had made

156 -8. Patrick Wright scored 50 not out and David Baldock knocked up a good 43. The planned BBQ had to be postponed due to number of reasons.

Next match is versus Knockers. It is always good to see local people walking around the boundary’s edge when out for a walk and stopping to watch the play for a few minutes. If you bring your doggie friend please ensure there is no memento of his visit near the field and clean-up afterwards please.

25 July sees the Historical Society going to see Standen House - when hopefully no umbrellas will be needed!

Church Services are in Salehurst church at 11 and in Church Lane Room, Rrobertsbridge at 9 am. Etchingham services are at 10.30 . Although Hurst Green church remains unused at present, with all these pleasant choices there is no excuse for that long lie-in.

1.25 shoppers’ bus at The George on a Tuesday.

On Sunday 8, while most people were watching the tennis a theft took place at the address shown at the foot of column. A set of white metal garden furniture, table and four chairs, was taken from the back garden which cannot be seen from the road. Tyre marks were made on the front lawn so if anyone was walking past Max Gate (but TV might have affected Sunday strollers )that afternoon and noticed a vehicle parked or reversing please tell the police.

Last Tuesday in every month is the night for Parish Council meetings. Open to all. Minutes are posted at the notice board by the village sign but if you come there is always a good chance that, if you raise your hand at the right time, you can have your say.

Lesley at Teknique will welcome you with her big smile.A waggy tailed doggie will greet you harmlessly when you drop in with your gifts for our troops in Afghanistan. Deployed, unexpectedly, to undertake Olympic Games security proves their ability to adjust to any situation they are asked to deal with. Keep the parcels flying out to these great chaps -and women as well. It means a lot to them.

The Hearing Bus, Action on Hearing, was busy when it called at Hurst Green recently and had some most useful advice and practical solutions for the hard of hearing including a TV set of head phones which give a perfect pitch and clarity. If you do this, please state that you were aware of the charity because the bus visited Hurst Green.

Activities at the Village Hall are advertised in the vestibule; martial arts, courses from colleges which will resume next term, the Friendship Club, (Black Bin Day at 2pm) Brownies meetings etc.
